SITE VISIT

TANJUNG TUALANG

During out 3 days 2 nights visit to Perak, we visited a few places. Perak is indeed a place full of history besides being a place that is rich of minerals back in the early 19th century.

We stopped by at Tanjung Tualang Tin Dredge No. 5 (TT5) for a short 2 hours tour after a 4 hours journey. There, we were told about the machinery and how things works. TT5 is said to be the last witness of the prosperity of the tin mining in Malaysia. This tin dredge comprising a 4500 tonne giant floating on the excavation site is a precious remain that tells story about history of Perak, which literally means silver in Malay, resembling the colour of the tin.

It is also one of only two tin dredges left in the entire country and among the few remaining reminders of how our forefathers toiled to make the Kinta Valley known as the most productive tin-producing area in the world once upon a time.

This is how the entire tin dredge looks like, from the outside and along the walkway towards the machinery. The inside of it is basically multiple small machineries and wires connecting one another. It is really interesting seeing how everything works together and how this used to contribute millions of dollars to Malaya.

NO. 74 : SYBIL'S CLINIC

After reading the book "NO DRAM OF MERCY", we roughly have idea about what this place used to be like. Remarkably, Papan begins to show signs of life towards sunset, when children come out to play and residents get home from work. Old friends chitchatting at the only two coffee shops, trees growing along the road in Papan, are among the sights that is uncommon.

The backdoor of Sybil's clinic that used to be a door where all the guerrillas sneaked into this place to seek for treatment.

Sybil's clinic that turned into a gallery today is well taken care of that many elements still remains : including the place where Josephine was stored.

top left : On the wall of the building there is some holes that is used to store important things, often look hidden.

top right : The view of the backdoor from the inside.

bottom right and left : Some herbs that grows on the structures of the building. also, the items used for tin mining about a century ago.

A WALK THROUGH PAPAN

Papan consists of a school, two coffee shops, Sybil's gallery, Istana Raja Bilah, the Mansion, houses and shoplots. It has two lakes as well, that used to be ex-mining spots. It also has a water tank at the top of the hilly slope.

MY CHOOSEN SITE

After walking through our site Papan, we are supposed to choose a site for ourselves. Considering about the context and my considerations, I have decided to choose a site whereby it is sandwiched between two present buildings. In my project 1, I have done an installation on a radio, which has a significant meaning to this whole story. All in all, it is to me, so important but also dangerous that is has to be there but not be too obvious in such a way that it is sort of hidden from the sight of visitors.

MY MASSING MODEL

Considering my installation in the first project, producing a proposal model as to express my idea in such a way that it is able to showcase what I wish to. Considering the existence of buildings on both sides, my idea of massing model is to make it as simple as possible, with the intention to make it a little broken, while still being functional.
